How Old Is The Internet? Today Is Its Birthday

How old do you think the Internet is? Five years old? Eight years old? How about 12 years old? Wrong on all counts! The Internet is 35 years old today. The Internet's first baby steps began in Leonard Kleinrock's UCLA lab 35 years ago today.

The computer science professor's team had networked its computer with one at the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park. The plan was for UCLA to send the letters "L-O-G" and for SRI to answer back with "I-N". The system crashed with the message reading just "L-O". Later when the attempt worked a note was made in the logbook "Talked to SRI host to host." The test brought little fanfare, but Klienrock knew that communicating over computer networks could change the world.

"What I never anticipated was that my 97 year old mother would be on the Internet today," said Klienrock. Even with the explosive growth we have seen, Klienrock still sees huge growth potential. He envisions Internet technology embedded in walls, furniture, even in a person's eyeglasses or belt.

Why Is Communication So Important?

Thirty-five years ago two computers communicated for the first time and the Internet was born. So why was communication so important? Here's a quick analysis that may help your business.

* Better Communication creates Better Organization

* Better Organization creates Better Efficiency

* Better Efficiency creates Higher Productivity

* Higher productivity creates Higher Profits

So as we can see, communication is a core component of every business. This is why we have a weekly ClickTALK newsletter, to let you know what we are doing. It's also why we have built "Send Suggestions" and "Request Assistance" into ClickFORMS, so you can communicate with us. BTW, Jeff Bradford reads every suggestion email that comes into the office. So if you want your idea heard, use "Send Suggestion". It's located under the Help menu in ClickFORMS.

"Request Assistance" and "Send Suggestion" Enhanced

Starting with ClickFORMS version 2.4.5 we enhanced how "Send Suggestion" and "Request Assistance" work. We used to use regular email to send these messages. Today, we use a web service to send these messages. What this means is that we eliminated email and the messages hit our servers directly. From our servers the messages go directly into our Customer Relationship Management software and routed to the right person for any required action. The replies are still by regular email, but we may change that in the future and reply right to you in ClickFORMS.
