Search Engine Optimization Tips and Tricks
Local Directories
If you cannot find your website listed on Google local search (http://local.google.com),
you can notify them via email at: local-listings@google.com.
On Yahoo! local search (http://local.yahoo.com), you can add your business information listing at: http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/local/cgi_change.
Microsoft business directory: http://sbd.bcentral.com ($49/yr).
On-Line Yellow Pages
You may consider getting listed in one (or a few) of the on-line yellow pages:
Keyword Strategy
The home page is always the primary target page for SEO work. We normally try to create a <TITLE> tag shorter than 65 char (for Google) in which we deliver a compelling message containing the most important (primary) target keywords for the site.
The other primary and secondary keywords can be peppered throughout the text of the pages on the website as they work in conjunction with the main (most competitive and important) keywords.
The main on-page optimization of keywords essentially consists of having many instances of the desired keyword in the body of the target page. The actual "density" of the keyword (num of keyword / total num of words) is what is being looked at. More weight is given to text found in certain tags.
Here is a common heuristic used in the SEO industry. Keep in mind, it is merely a guideline. A general target is to have the target keyword show up at least 2-4 times in a page and as frequently as possible while maintaining a clean, visitor friendly copy.
- Inbound link anchor text: 10 points.
- Title: 10 points
- Domain name: 7 points (recent studies show this to be controversial)
- Large h1-h2 headings: 5 points
- First sentence of first paragraph 5 points
- Path or filename: 4 points
- Proximity (multi keywords): 4 points
- Beginning of a sentence 1.5 points
- Bold or italic text: 1 points
- Usage in text: 1 point
- Alt tag: .5 point
- Meta description: .5 points
- Meta keywords: .05 point
A simple recipe for optimizing a page for a given KEYWORD would look like this:
- Have your TITLE tag contain KEYWORD (and try to keep title < 65 char).
- Have the site banner be CSS based to include the tag line as a H1 tag with target
KEYWORDS.
- Have a H1/H2 (style with CSS) with KEYWORD as section header/page identification.
- Have a few paragraphs with good density of KEYWORD but without looking quirky.
- Create a standard navigation menu (preferably in text using CSS) rich with KEYWORD
- You may have some links to other pages in the page copy. It gives you opportunities to place valuable keyword rich links to help the target page and also benefit the current one. Note that you must still have links to all your pages in a standard menu system for good usability.
- If possible, use CSS to cleverly move your menu code below the valuable copy and H1 headers
- Keep all Javascript in a separate .js file (it increases your keyword density, brings valuable copy closer to the top, unclutters the file and eases maintenance)
- Same thing for all CSS code
